Job Description – General Assistant at Cashbuild

As a General Assistant, your primary responsibility is to provide outstanding customer service, maintain merchandising standards, and ensure a safe and clean shopping environment. You will play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of the store.

Minimum Job Requirements

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Education: Minimum Grade 10 (NQF 3) with one year of work-related experience OR Grade 12 without experience.
  • Language Proficiency: Ability to communicate fluently in English and the dominant language spoken in the store’s geographical area.
  • Legal Requirements: South African ID or valid work permit.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic calculations accurately.
  • Work Availability: Willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Ability to Handle Pressure: Must be able to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities of a General Assistant

1. Customer Service

  • Assist customers by providing product recommendations and guidance.
  • Handle and resolve customer complaints professionally.

2. Merchandising Standards

  • Ensure bulk stock is arranged according to the store layout.
  • Maintain a fully stocked and well-organized display area.

3. Housekeeping Duties

  • Keep aisles free of obstacles for customer safety.
  • Stock must be merchandised immediately upon receipt.
  • Ensure correct price labeling on shelves.
  • Complete the checklist for the canteen, toilets, and showers.

4. Safety Compliance (OHSA Requirements)

  • Always use safety gear and comply with Occupational Health & Safety regulations.
  • Ensure the safe storage of stock in racks and bulk areas.
  • Report safety concerns or discrepancies to the Store Manager.

5. Stock Loss Management

  • Identify and report damaged stock to the Store Manager.

6. Performance and Results

  • Consistently meets and exceeds performance targets.
  • Completes work accurately and in line with company standards.
  • Takes responsibility for following through on commitments.

7. Problem-Solving Skills

  • Identifies and addresses problems effectively.
  • Escalates unresolved issues to the appropriate department.

8. Decision-Making Skills

  • Makes timely decisions within company policies.
  • Considers the impact of decisions before implementing them.

9. Planning and Organization

  • Plans tasks according to company policies and operational requirements.

10. Handling Work Pressure

  • Remains calm and focused under high-pressure situations.

  • Works well with customers, colleagues, and suppliers.
  • Resolves daily conflicts effectively and professionally.
